Interview with Mirnad Osmanović

Mirnad Osmanović is a senior studying accounting and finance at Central Connecticut State University. He was nominated for the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board scholarship and is on the Dean's and President's List. Mirnad received a 2024 BAPA scholarship and attended the 2024 Annual Forum in Detroit, Michigan.
How did you find out about BAPA and its scholarship offerings?
I know several people in the Hartford, Connecticut, area who regularly attend BAPA events. Their involvement sparked my interest in the organization. When I learned about the scholarships BAPA offers, I saw a great opportunity to finance my education while getting involved with BAPA and connecting with amazing people in the Bosnian American community.
How has BAPA's scholarship supported you?
The BAPA scholarship is helping me reach my goal of becoming a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). As an accounting major, I need to complete 150 credit hours to earn my license. BAPA’s scholarship helps cover the cost of the additional credits I need. The scholarship is also covering costs of the resources and exams required to obtain my CPA license, making it easier for me to stay focused on my studies and career path.
What was your experience like at BAPA's 2024 Annual Forum?
Attending the BAPA forum taught me a lot. I realized just how large and connected the Bosnian American community is. I met people from all over the country, many of whom work in fields I hope to enter one day. Another important lesson I learned was how many people in the community had to overcome challenges similar to those I’m facing. It’s reassuring to know that there are people willing to offer guidance and support.
While at the forum, I gave a presentation about wealth-building for Bosnian American youth. My goal was to introduce the importance of building wealth, not just for personal growth, but for the benefit of the entire Bosnian American community. I wanted to show how financial stability can help individuals succeed and create a stronger foundation for future generations. BAPA was really helpful when it came to providing guidance on my presentation. I received valuable feedback on my project, from how to make the topic of my research more focused to simplifying parts of my presentation, ensuring I didn’t spend too much time explaining complex financial concepts that were not as relevant to my target audience. Overall, BAPA made the entire process much easier and less intimidating with their clear and helpful advice.
How has your experience with BAPA developed your academic and/or career goals?
The scholarship has given me the financial support I need to keep moving forward with my studies and achieve my goal of becoming a CPA. I’ve also met amazing people who have given me valuable advice and resources for future opportunities. Most importantly, presenting at the forum was a key moment for me. It was the first time I spoke in front of such a large audience, which felt powerful to experience. I will always remember it, and I’ve made it a goal to become a more confident presenter in the future.
What advice do you have for other Bosnian students who are interested in applying for the scholarship?
Just apply, even if you feel uncertain or think you might not meet every single requirement. The application process itself is a great learning experience, and you never know what opportunities might open up by taking that first step. Be confident in your achievements, stay true to your story, and make sure your passion and goals shine through in your application. It’s all about showing your potential and dedication!
